Knicker parade!

One of my new year plans that has been successful has been my pledge to make my own undies!

I had some gingham knickers elastic in my stash but never got around to downloading a pattern.  I decided in January to treat myself to a knicker making kit from http://www.trixielixie.co.uk The kit included a basic knickers pattern in three sizes: small, medium and large, a fat quarter of purple polka dot cotton fabric, a jersey gusset and a couple of metres of matching knickers elastic.  The instructions were very good and there are also videos on the website to guide you through the process.  I traced a size large figuring that the elastic would hold them up (nothing worse than too tight knickers!) They took less than an hour to sew up and it was such fun! Here’s the finished article:

As I had a few metres of elastic to hand ( and desperate to have another go!). I raided my scrap bag for more fabric.  An hour later I had made these:

It’s such a brilliant pattern as you can squeeze a pair out of a fat quarter.  The black and white fabric was left over from my Tilly picnic blanket skirt, the navy came from my culottes, quite love the idea of wearing matching knickers!

They proved to be a perfect fit and are so comfortable.  I hatched a plan to try and replace my sad sorry shop bought pants with fab frilly ones.  I bought some more elastic and picked up a couple of half metres of quilting cotton and went on to sew these:

I also got some elastic from ebay but the quality is not so good, I used a free fat quarter from Sew magazine and put together these:

As you can see the elastic is a bit saggy but they are wearable.

Part of my me made May pledge has been to wear me made knickers everyday, six pairs seemed to be enough but I think I might need a few more for variety!

I highly recommended having a go if you haven’t already as they are the perfect quick and easy make.  Knowing that your pants match your skirt is also a nice touch! (Other half shakes his head as I proudly declare “look- matching pants!”)

Off to rummage in my scrap bag for inspiration!
